So this will be a short blog tonight. I am going to post a longer, more detailed blog tomorrow. We got back from Cape Coast/Elmina tonight around 6, and since then I’ve been doing homework, catching up on emails, talking to my mom and sister, and getting ready for the week.
Short version: WE VISITED A SLAVE CASTLE, WALKED THROUGH THE FOREST 200 FEET ABOVE THE GROUND (VIA 7 DIFFERENT BRIDGES), ATE DINNER ON THE BEACH AND HAD A BONFIRE, ATE LOTS OF CAKE, AND MADE OUR VERY OWN BATIK!

Our two long skype visits today were wonderful - very good for my heart. You look beautiful, as always, and healthy. I am very glad we were able to Skype today. Thank you for this peak into your weekend trip to Cape Coast/Elmina. The photos you and others took with your camera are beautiful (tree top walking) and sobering (the castle). They perfectly capture the awe of the natural surrounding, the uniqueness of where you are and its history and the heaviness of the slave market. I find it odd that the castle had touches of precise architectural decoration when it was constructed for such inhuman purposes - interstiong juxtaposition - but found in architecture throughout history. My favorite photo is of you against the backdrop of the Elmina fishing village - so picturesque. Of course, it was fascinating, fascinating to see you and your friends doing the batiking-what a gift you all were given to be the first to experience this art form in its native land. Your fabric truned out beautifully honey - I love the flower motif and the design i sso "you." The orange color is rich and, I think, evocative of African heritage. I love it. You will treasure this memory and your fabric forever. I can't wait to see and feel it. I see it draped beautifully on your wall -- giving you pleasure and precious remembrance of your time in Ghana for years to come. I just loved the pictures you put up. You and your friends look like you are having a wonderful time. I can't wait to read about it all. I was especially moved to see the photos of the slave castle at Elmina as I have been reading alot about it's history recently. Very unsettling to even contemplate all those thousands of men, women, and children going through that "Gate of No Return," but it is good to have these tangible symbols of history to remind us of the reality of what once was and what we can never allow to happen again. I was so glad to see the photo of the inscription on the Monument of Reconciliation. Very powerfulw words, indeed! So cool that you learned to batik. I can't wait to see all the color and detail of your creation. Treewalking, batiking, the beach, friends, and some history too. What a special and memorable weekend it must have been.
